Japan launches satellite to monitor greenhouse gases

Posted by: on Monday, 26 January 2009

Japan in mid-January launched the world’s first satellite dedicated to monitoring global greenhouse gas emissions, as part of efforts to tackle climate change.

The project will enable scientists to measure the quantities of greenhouse gases being released around the world and where exactly they are coming from, the BBC reported.

The United States is expected to launch a similar satellite in coming months, but with a main focus on measuring the amount of carbon dioxide being absorbed by the world’s oceans and forests.
