Opposition sees major cuts in climate change programs
A Coalition government would slash funding from or completely do away with some of Kevin Rudd’s key climate change initiatives.
Issuing its hit list of cost-cutting measures designed to bring the budget back into surplus, the Opposition has targeted reducing funding for international climate change adaptation initiatives, aimed at neighboring countries cope with rising sea levels. It would do away with the Australian Carbon Trust and the Climate Change Foundation. Funds would be slashed from carbon capture storage programs as well as clean tech development initiatives such as the Green Car Innovation Fund and the Renewable Energy Future Fund.
Climate Change Minister Penny Wong said the list proved the Opposition remained full of climate change skeptics.
”This just shows that Mr Abbott would be a risk to our economy, to the environment and to future generations,” she said.
Deputy Greens leader Christine Milne said the Opposition had gone too far with the measures outlined yesterday.
”Tony Abbott must have been telling the truth when he said climate change was absolute crap,” said Milne. ”Direct action from the Liberal Party equates to slashing almost every climate-related fund they could get their hands on.”
