Warmer winter cuts Australian emissions
One of the warmest winters on record has helped Australia reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions.
Winter emissions were cut by 3.1 million tonnes, which is the same as taking 3 million cars off the road, according to a report by The Climate Group. The biggest drop in absolute terms was in NSW, but the biggest in percentage terms was in South Australia.
“There’s been a noticeable decrease in emissions across the four states [the eastern states and South Australia] over winter,” The Climate Group’s Rupert Posner told the press. “Indeed emissions have gone down by about 3 million tonnes or about 4 percent.”
“The last emissions to fall really are in Victoria, where the brown coal generators which are the most greenhouse intensive produce electricity the most cheaply,” Posner is quoted as saying.
